This wine comes from good soil beneath the Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot that Rodolphe farms biodynamically. The vines, planted in 1961, grow in clay with a good amount of iron over limestone. This gives the wine more character than most Burgundy vineyards, and Rodolphe strives to bring this forward. Fermented in barrels before aging for 10 months in older oak barrels. Dark and fairly dense color, red fruit, freshness to balance the concentration, persistent finish with fine tannins, and a hint of juice in the fruit.
This is not a wine we have ever bought from Rodolphe, as he produces very little and sells most of his products locally. We tasted it in October, three months after bottling, but there was absolutely no bottle shock, in fact, it was surprisingly early. The fresh cherry aromas of the young Pinot came through the glass. I noticed remarkable purity on both the nose and palate, good acidity, and the influence of old vineyard fruit adding color and depth to the flavor. A fine example, at an affordable price, of the quality of Pinot that this vintage promises.
Technique
Origin plot: Côte de Beaune, commune of Chassagne-Montrachet.
Surface area of the plot: 1.94 hectares
Soil type: Clay-limestone-sand

Vinification and aging: The Pinot Noir grapes are harvested in small crates to preserve the berries. After a sorting table, the grapes are destemmed and then placed in vats for 12 to 20 days. After pressing, the wine matures for a year in barrels, 10% of which is new wood, and 2 months in vats, before being bottled by gravity according to the lunar calendar.
