The Mâcon Rouge is produced from very old Gamay vines planted in the 1920s on clay-limestone and sandy soils.

Yields are deliberately low (30hl per hectare) in order to preserve good concentration. Like the rest of the estate, the vines are grown organically and the soil is ploughed. The grapes are harvested by hand in crates to avoid damaging the quality of the bunches and preventing oxidation.

The wine is vinified without the addition of sulphur and with gentle extraction of colour and tannins to produce a full-bodied, velvety palate. The wine is then matured in oak barrels for around 16 months, during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation, before being bottled without fining or filtration.

This red wine is ideal for terrines, cold meats, meats, grilled meats, strong fish with a spicy sauce or cheeses.

The estate was founded in 1956 by André Bonhomme, when it produced 4 ha of Mâcon Viré. For more than fifty years, André Bonhomme played a major role in the Mâcon region; he was a precursor of estate bottling, co-founder of the Vignerons Indépendants de Saône-et-Loire and co-initiator of the recognition of the Viré Clessé AOC.
