Located between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean, this region is well protected from the west winds by the Landes forest. It includes some of the most prestigious appellations: Saint-Estephe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Listrac, Mou- lis, Margaux, Médoc and Haut-Médoc. Only red wines and some rare dry whites are produced here.
